We were originally going to hike the Barnhardt trail, but realized at the last minute that this was the same area damaged by the mid-2004 Willow Fire. Worried about trail erosion, we decided to hike along the Ballantine Trail instead. In the end, it probably would not have made any difference.

The trailhead is located about 4.5 miles west of Highway 260, at the end of Ogdon Ranch Road, just south of Cottonwood. This was a 14 mile (round trip) hike with about 2300 feet of elevation gain, starting in the high desert and ending among pine trees.
