Cato Unbound » Blog Archive » We All Own Stolen Goods ”ť”ť and How Defending Property Rights Can Help the World’s Most Oppressed People http://www.cato-unbound.org/2008/05/12/leif-wen... Wenar proposes a very interesting trust-and-tariff mechanism to combat rights violations. I normally root for free trade; NAFTA all the way. From the property rights stance, however, things may be a little bit different. Further, trade going on in the developing world often isn't truly 'free': the U.S. subsidizes large amounts of food production, to the devastation of developing countries whose farmers can't compete. The end point being that there may be policy measures that can make a difference, a positive difference, in the world. I think this is good food for thought, and perhaps even action.
One of the great things about Cato Unbound are the response articles and dialogue between these people - it'll be interesting to watch and see what develops.
Plumpy’nut Can Save the World One Child at a Time http://www.thelangreport.com/solvers-and-soluti... We’ve all seen it. Starving babies clinging to their mothers or worse yet, abandoned to a single bedroll, left alone to suffer a fate that could be easily avoided for the price of a candy bar. If you haven’t heard about Plumpy’nut, it is a high protein and energy peanut-based paste in a foil wrapper. It tastes slightly sweeter than peanut butter. It is categorized by the WHO as a Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF).
