Poker Tips for Beginners Covering Tournament Poker Table Manners on Gamblers Television

The best advice I can give a beginner about table manners is to follow the action carefully and avoid getting distracted. It is your time to act when the player seated to your right holding cards has completed their action. You then can call, fold or raise. It is important for you to know exactly what your betting options are in order to move the game along. View your hand when it is your turn to act. Dont give out any tells to your opponents by looking at your hand anytime before. Remember blinds increase during tournaments so pay close attention to the action at the table.
Some casinos allow for tableside dining during your play in a tournament but I dont recommend it. Your mind has to be on your opponents action at the table as well as your own. How can you concentrate on the game in a structure where blinds increase when you are working on an entrée at the table?
Just about all casinos do not allow cell phone use at the table. You cannot talk on your phone and play in a tournament. Thats bad table manners and disrupts play. You will be forced to fold your hand if you are caught using your cell phone at the table.
The biggest difference you will notice between your home game and casino game is the lack of socializing at the table. You will have some but for the most part tournament players at casinos take their game serious and so should you. Contestants want to concentrate on the game and not on a friendly conversation with you. Please dont be offended if you are conversing friendly with players and you are treated back with short responses. You are not at a social event you are participating against competitive players. Be sure to respect your opponent for taking the game seriously no matter how big or small the stakes are. Long conversations with the dealers are always discouraged. Their job is to manage the action at the table and cannot be distracted with a social conversation with a player. No cursing. And using the F word will get you a 10-minute penalty from the tournament.
