His term will take effect on January 1, 2007. Cato Unbound » Blog Archive » We All Own Stolen Goods ”¯”¯ and How Defending Property Rights Can Help the World’s Most Oppressed People
http://www.cato-unbound.org/2008/05/12/leif-wen...
Wenar proposes a very interesting trust-and-tariff mechanism to combat rights violations. I normally root for free trade; NAFTA all the way. From the property rights stance, however, things may be a little bit different. Further, trade going on in the developing world often isn't truly 'free': the U.S. subsidizes large amounts of food production, to the devastation of developing countries whose farmers can't compete. The end point being that there may be policy measures that can make a difference, a positive difference, in the world. I think this is good food for thought, and perhaps even action. One of the great things about Cato Unbound are the response articles and dialogue between these people - it'll be interesting to watch and see what develops.

The UN nuclear agency says North Korea has ordered international monitors at its main nuclear facility to remove seals from its equipment and leave the country. Pyongyang has also said it will drop out of six-party nuclear disarmament talks in reaction to a United Nations rebuke over its rocket launch earlier this month. The White House has urged North Korea to cease its threats and honor international commitments.
