Browns’ Baker Mayfield provides live Twitter commentary in loss to Raiders

Baker Mayfield was unable to lead the Browns in their Monday night tilt against the Raiders, so the fourth-year quarterback — who could only watch as third-stringer Nick Mullens stepped in for Cleveland — did the next best thing.

Mayfield, who alongside backup Case Keenum was unable to suit up after being placed on Cleveland’s reserve/COVID list, provided live Twitter commentary in what was ultimately a heartbreaking 16-14 loss to Las Vegas.

Mayfield started with a tried-and-true entry while the game was still in its early stages:

Mayfield was mostly silent for the remainder of the half, not tweeting again until roughly the one-minute mark after Jovante Moffatt lowered the hammer on Derek Carr on third-and-goal to keep the Raiders from extending their lead to 14-0 before halftime.

Mayfield’s next comment came midway through the third quarter as rookie linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah forced a Carr fumble at the Raiders 49. The Browns recovered, setting them up for a short field to potentially cut the Raiders’ lead to one possession.

Mayfield needed only 10 minutes to tweet again, giving a shout out to his running back, Nick Chubb, for Cleveland’s first score of the game. Shortly after, he gave a shout out to guard Joel Bitonio for a key block that led to the score:

Mayfield’s next tweet wished the best for Browns defensive end Takk McKinley, who was carted off the field with an apparent ankle injury. Shortly thereafter, Mayfield gave some love to his backup, whose pass to Harrison Bryant on fourth-and-5 from the 6-yard line gave Cleveland a 14-13 lead with 3:45 remaining.

Unfortunately for the Browns, Mayfield’s next tweet was ultimately indicative of the final outcome: The Browns couldn’t wind down the clock after a Carr interception, giving the Raiders one last shot for a go-ahead score with 1:50 remaining on the clock. Mayfield seemed to hope for the home crowd to get as loud as possible in order to make it harder on the Raiders, but it ultimately wasn’t enough, as Daniel Carlson sank his third field goal of the day with a 48-yard game-winner.

Mayfield has not tweeted since the end of the game, which dropped the Browns to 7-7 on the season and 12th in the AFC playoff seeding.
