Ja’Marr Chase by the numbers: Rookie WR has Randy Moss-esque performance in Bengals’ win over Chiefs

Ja’Marr Chase flashed shades of Randy Moss against the Chiefs on Sunday.

The Bengals’ rookie wide receiver was unstoppable in helping lead Cincinnati to a 34-31 win against Kansas City. He caught three touchdowns and tallied 266 receiving yards in the win, which allowed the Bengals to clinch the AFC North crown for the first time since 2015.

Ja’Marr Chase stats vs. Chiefs

The Chiefs had no answer for the 21-year-old rookie receiver on Sunday.

Chase had 266 receiving yards on 11 receptions, including three for touchdowns. Two of his three scores were on passes of 69 and 72 yards.

The performance was historic on several different fronts. It was the most receiving yards by a Bengals player in history, topping the previous record of 260 held by Chad Johnson back on Nov. 12, 2006. On top of that, Chase also surpassed Jerry Butler’s NFL single-game rookie receiving yards record of 255, set on Sept. 23, 1979.

NFL Next Gen Stats listed 256 of Chase’s yards as coming outside the numbers, which it said was a record in the Next Gen Stats era (since 2016).

Chase’s NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year case

The big game by Chase added to what has been a standout season for the rookie wide receiver. And to those watching, it harkened back memories of Moss.

With his performance on Sunday, Chase’s season numbers are up to 1,429 receiving yards and 13 receiving touchdowns off 79 receptions. He entered the game with the eighth-most all-time receiving yards by a rookie, but jumped all the way up to second. Here’s how the list looks now:

And according to Football Perspective, Chase is now in exclusive company.

Moss had 1,313 receiving yards and 17 touchdowns on 69 receptions during his rookie season. Moss’ 17 receiving touchdowns are the most by a rookie, with Chase’s 13 now the second-most.

Ja’Marr Chase 40 time

Chase frequently put on the burners in the win. He was clocked running 21.74 mph on his 72-yard touchdown reception according to NFL Next Gen Stats, the 10th-fastest time clocked this season.

The former LSU wideout came into the league already considered one of the fastest receivers in the sport. According to Stathead, he has a 40-yard dash of 4.34 seconds, which would tie him for the 37th-fastest time by a receiver since 2000.

That speed has made him a challenging receiver to cover all season. NFL Next Gen Stats counts seven of his touchdowns as having come on a go route, the most of any receiver this season.
