Reading Women 0-1 Manchester United Women: Rachel Williams’ late winner sends United top of WSL | Football News

Manchester United have gone top of the Women’s Super League after substitute Rachel Williams scored a late goal to give them a 1-0 victory at Reading.

Williams’ 87th-minute winner saw United move ahead of Chelsea on goal difference at the top after the Blues’ match against Liverpool earlier on Sunday was abandoned after six minutes due to a frozen pitch.

Third-placed Arsenal were also denied the chance to become WSL leaders after their game at Brighton on Sunday evening was also postponed due to an unplayable pitch.

United looked to be in for a frustrating afternoon at Reading as Katie Zelem missed the chance to put the visitors ahead when her 40th-minute penalty was saved by Jacqueline Burns after Alessia Russo was brought down by Diane Caldwell.

But United finally got the breakthrough in the 87th minute when Williams found the top corner from near the penalty spot.

Everton cruised to a 3-0 home win against mid-table rivals West Ham to move fifth in the WSL.

After a delayed kick-off, the Toffees struck instantly as Karen Holmgaard headed in the opener after three minutes.

Everton doubled their lead just nine minutes later through Megan Finnigan.

Substitute Aggie Beever-Jones then added a third in the second-half as she fired in a stunning 70th-minute strike to move Brian Sorensen’s side within five points of fourth-placed Manchester City.

Meanwhile, West Ham remain seventh, six points above Tottenham whose game against bottom side Leicester on Sunday afternoon was called off due to a frozen pitch.
