Trade in your phone to Verizon and get almost any new phone for free – here’s how

The thought of upgrading your phone can be both exciting and slightly stressful. Phones seem to be getting more expensive, and the upgrade options seem endless. But Verizon has got you covered with a new trade-in deal.Â

Through this offer, new and existing customers on Verizon’s Unlimited myPlans can trade in any phone and receive a free new phone of their choosing. There are quite a few options to choose from, such as the iPhone 16 Pro, the Samsung Galaxy S25, and the Google Pixel 9 Pro (all of which we’ve reviewed and recommend).Â
There are a few stipulations, however. To trade in a phone, it must be a recent Apple, Samsung, or Google model, usually no more than 5 years old. After you trade in the phone, the credits will go toward your new smartphone of choice. These credits are paid in 36 monthly installments, so you must commit to the plan for 3 years. Verizon does offer a price lock for 3 years, so your plan won’t get more expensive.
The iPhone 16 Pro, launched last September, comes with new features like Apple Intelligence — the phone has a Siri model that can access ChatGPT, an emoji and image generator, and a thoughtful email reply.
The iPhone 16 Pro also has a stellar camera that captures crisp 4K content. The right side of the device has an action button you can program to launch your camera or the flashlight, record a voice memo, translate, or even Shazam a song.Â

The Samsung Galaxy S25 introduces a slimmer design, camera upgrades, and Galaxy AI. ZDNET contributor Prakhar Khanna tested the device for himself and said he liked it more than its Ultra version.Â
“Compared to Google and Apple, the Galaxy S25 offers a better display, the best in-hand feel in its segment, a more versatile camera setup, and good battery life. It’s better than the similarly priced Pixel 9 and iPhone 16 — and my top pick for anyone looking for a compact flagship right now,” he wrote.Â
The Google Pixel 9 Pro is also a great option. Like the iPhone 16 Pro, it was released last fall. And like the other models, this Pixel device is equipped with Google’s AI software, Gemini.Â

Its primary camera is 50 MP, and the telephoto lens is 48 MP, which is great for everyday shooting. This Google Pixel 9 Pro is just as capable as the newest Apple and Samsung models, down to the camera and software capabilities.

How I rated this dealÂ
With this offer, you’re essentially getting a free phone by trading in an old one. However, you will be locked in with a 3-year contract with Verizon, which may not be ideal for some people. Factoring in these reasons, we gave this deal a 4/5 Editor’s deal rating. A free phone is free, but signing up for a 3-year contract may be too big of a commitment for many people. This is your offer if you want a new phone with reliable service.
