US jury finds ex-officer guilty of manslaughter in Wright killing | Courts News

BREAKING,

Kimberly Potter fatally shot 20-year-old Daunte Wright near Minneapolis in April, fuelling racial justice protests.

A jury in the United States has found former Minnesota police officer Kimberly Potter guilty of two counts of manslaughter in the fatal shooting of Black motorist Daunte Wright earlier this year.

Potter pleaded not guilty to first- and second-degree manslaughter charges in relation to the shooting of Wright, 20, during a traffic stop north of Minneapolis on April 11.

The jury found Potter guilty of both charges on Wednesday.

Prosecutors had argued during the trial that Potter, a 26-year police veteran, “betrayed her badge” and flouted years of training by mistakenly drawing her firearm instead of her Taser during the fatal incident.

Wright’s killing set off demonstrations against police brutality in the Brooklyn Center, Minnesota community where it took place, and came amid a wider protest movement demanding racial justice in the US.
