Pete Carroll asked Adrian Peterson to consider coaching, but running back ‘wants to play’ for now

Running back Adrian Peterson’s future in the NFL is uncertain, but it sounds like he has no intentions of giving up playing yet, according to Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll.

Carroll disclosed on Wednesday that he’s talked to Peterson about potentially transitioning into a coaching role. Carroll did not make it clear if he wants Peterson to join the Seahawks coaching staff specifically.

The 36-year-old running back apparently isn’t ready to give up playing yet, though. Carroll said that Peterson “wants to play” for now.

One of the reasons behind Carroll’s interest in making Peterson a coach is believed to be the recent success of Seahawks running back Rashaad Penny. With Peterson on the sidelines, Penny has had three 100-yard rushing yards games, which happen to be the only three he’s had this season. Additionally, Penny’s scored five touchdowns, the only five he’s scored this season. While Peterson can’t be the only person behind Penny’s success, it does help having one of the greatest running backs of all time on the sidelines.

Peterson has played in four games this season, three with the Titans and one with the Seahawks. The last game Peterson played in was on Dec. 5 when the Seahawks beat the 49ers 30-23. Peterson has been dealing with a lower back injury since, and was placed on the practice squad injured list on Dec. 29, meaning his 2021-22 season is over.

After Peterson’s 10-year career with the Vikings, he’s played on six different teams. He’s struggled to have a productive season since 2015 when he rushed for 1,485 yards and 11 touchdowns. This was also the last season the seven-time Pro Bowler was selected to the Pro Bowl. It was his second to last year with Minnesota.

Peterson’s only had one 1,000-yard rushing season since, which came in 2018 with Washington. After his struggles with the Titans and the Seahawks this season, his future in the NFL remains uncertain.

According to Spotrac, Peterson signed a one-year, $70,000 deal with the Seahawks when they signed him onto their practice squad. So, Peterson will become a free agent again this off season after he turns 37.
