Aberdeen join Hibernian by committing to becoming carbon neutral by 2040 | Football News

Aberdeen have become the latest Scottish football club to sign up to a United Nations climate action pledge to become carbon neutral by 2040.

The Pittodrie outfit has joined the UN Sports for Climate Action Framework which also will see them commit to reducing emissions by 50 per cent by 2030.

Sky Sports was the first sports broadcaster to sign up to the United Nations climate action pledge, with Hibernian the only other Scottish club involved so far.

The Scottish FA and SPFL recently released a statement outlining their own sustainability commitment that includes a pledge to reduce carbon emissions from energy, waste and water.

Scottish football’s governing body also plans to sign up to the UN pledge.

The initiative was launched at last year’s COP26 summit in Glasgow to take rigorous and immediate action to work towards achieving net zero carbon with transparent action plans and robust targets.

It has two overarching objectives: achieving a clear trajectory for the global sports community to combat climate change and using sports as a tool to drive climate awareness and action.

Aberdeen chairman Dave Cormack said: “Today’s signing underlines our intent to become net-zero but it’s only the beginning. Behind this pledge is the ongoing development of a robust strategy with clear, measurable goals and an implementation plan around every aspect of our activities.

“As a club, we already have initiatives in place to reduce our impact on the environment, but we must go much further.

“With our widespread reach and unique impact, we can show real leadership on combating climate change. Working with our partners, sponsors, corporates, suppliers and fans, we will explore even more ways in which we can make a significant, tangible difference and help drive change in our behaviours.”

What is Sky Sports Zero?

As part of our Sky Zero ambition to be net zero carbon by 2030, we’re improving the sustainability of our sports productions and working with industry partners to create change.

In the UK and Ireland, we’re raising awareness through the BAFTA albert Sports Consortium, which we jointly founded with other broadcasters in 2020. We’ve offered our production teams carbon literacy training, encouraged them to use public transport and car shares and cut the number of flights they take.

We’ve been working with BAFTA albert on empowering our teams to make editorial content that supports a vision for a sustainable future, because it’s not just about how we make TV. We’ll use our scale and reach as Europe’s leading direct-to-consumer media and entertainment company, to start new conversations and inspire action. We’ll spread the word through our Sky Sports channels and programmes, inspiring as many people as we can to join us and #GoZero
