England lock Charlie Ewels has been given a three-match ban for the red card he received just 82 seconds into the Six Nations contest with Ireland.

The Bath second row was sent off for a head-on-head tackle on James Ryan at Twickenham on Saturday, and shown the fastest red card in championship history as a result.

He will miss this Saturday’s Six Nations finale for England against France in Paris, Bath’s Premiership clash vs Sale Sharks on March 26, and Bath’s Premiership fixture vs Worcester Warriors on March 30.

He will be able to lose one match of the ban if he undertakes a tackle-technique course.

Appearing before a judicial committee consisting of Australian Chair Adam Casselden, David Croft (Australia) and Jamie Corsi (Wales) on Wednesday, Ewels’ sanction was reduced from six weeks to three weeks due to a number of mitigating factors.

These include Ewels’ early acceptance he had committed an act of foul play which warranted a red card, his “remorse and contrition” for the offence and his “relatively unblemished disciplinary record over a long playing career.”

The judicial committee applied World Rugby’s mandatory minimum mid-range entry for foul play resulting in contact with the head, starting at a six-week entry point before reducing by half in line with mitigation.

“The Player may apply to take part in the coaching Intervention Programme to substitute the final match of his sanction for a coaching intervention aimed at modifying specific techniques and technical issues that contributed to foul play.”

Leinster and Ireland second row Ryan will not be considered for selection against Scotland in Dublin on Saturday as a result of concussion picked up due to the incident.

Ryan has undergone 10 Head Injury Assessments (HIA) in his professional career to date, including seven in the past 15 months.
