Everton to lodge appeal against Allan red card and subsequent three-match suspension vs Newcastle | Football News

Everton are appealing Allan’s red card during Thursday’s 1-0 victory over Newcastle in the Premier League on the grounds of wrongful dismissal, Sky Sports News understands.

The Brazilian’s 83rd-minute sending-off looked to have ended any hopes of a victory before Alex Iwobi seized the chance with an angled drive nine minutes into the additional 14, which were tagged on mainly due to the VAR review of the red card and a protester who tied himself to a goalpost.

It was only Everton’s third Premier League win since September and lifted them three points clear of 18th-placed Watford with two matches still in hand.

Speaking after the game, Everton manager Frank Lampard was naturally delighted with the win but furious with the red card decision.

He said: “It’s not a red card. Alan Shearer, Mr Newcastle himself, just said so and the frustrating thing for us is we had the most blatant one of the season against Man City (a penalty not given for handball).

“The referee gets it wrong, we get the apology, this time the referee sees it, he gives a yellow card. Did he seriously endanger the player by kicking him on the foot?

“We now lose Allan for three games. The system is not working because of decisions like tonight. VAR has gone wrong for us twice now.”

The VAR official Stuart Attwell who advised Craig Pawson to consult the pitchside monitor at Goodison Park has already been chosen to referee Everton’s FA Cup quarter final at Palace on Sunday. The club have until 5pm this evening to lodge the appeal.

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher:

“I feel the decision falls under on-field yellow card. We’ve got to accept now that there’s a new layer of scrutiny and that is to look at every tackle like that and what they’ve done. When you look at the tackle, you see an image of Allan flying through the air with both feet off the ground.

“The other thing they look at now is the point of contact, which is another element referees don’t always spot on the field. They [the match officials] say the point of contact is just above the ankle and they’ve made this conscious decision that this season that a challenge with point of contact just above the ankle is going to receive a red card.

“I can understand why Craig Pawson has initially shown a yellow card and most people would’ve accepted that – but because of this extra layer of scrutiny, Allan has paid the price for the VAR.”
