Pep Guardiola insists Manchester City’s rivalry with Liverpool has not turned toxic after Sunday’s clash at Anfield was marred by incidents off the pitch.
Merseyside Police are investigating allegations coins were thrown at Guardiola during Sunday’s 1-0 defeat at Anfield, as well as an attack on the Manchester City team bus as it departed the stadium.
Manchester City supporters were also condemned after chants were heard coming from, and graffiti was found inside, the away end regarding the Hillsborough disaster.
Guardiola issued an apology to those affected by the chants but, despite counterpart Jurgen Klopp’s sending off, the Spaniard dismissed suggestions the Liverpool fixture had become toxic.
“I didn’t hear the chants,” Guardiola said. “If it happened, I am so sorry. It does not represent who we are as a team, as a club, if this happened.”
He continued: “No, I don’t think it is [toxic]. From our side I am pretty sure of that.”
