Czech Republic international Jakub Jankto has publicly come out as gay in a social media statement.

The Getafe midfielder, who is on loan at Sparta Prague, has become the third active footballer to come out as gay, following Adelaide United defender Josh Cavallo in 2021 and Blackpool striker Jake Daniels last year.

In a video posted on his Twitter and Instagram accounts, Jankto said: “Hi, I’m Jakub Jankto. Like everybody else, I have my strengths. I have my weaknesses. I have a family. I have my friends. I have a job which I have been doing it as best as I can, for years, with seriousness, professionalism and passion.

“Like everybody else, I also want to live my life in freedom. Without fears. Without prejudice. Without violence. But with love.

“I am homosexual and I no longer want to hide myself.”

Jankto made his international debut in 2017 and has earned 45 caps for his country, scoring four goals.

Sparta Prague committed their support to the 27-year-old, saying: “Jakub Jankto spoke openly about his sexual orientation with the club’s management, coach and teammates some time ago.

“Everything else concerns his personal life. No further comments. No more questions. You have our support. Live your life, Jacob. Nothing else matters.”

In a statement on Twitter, the Premier League also said: “We’re with you, Jakub. Football is for everyone.”
