Leyton Or 2 – 0 Crewe

Leyton Orient lifted the Sky Bet League Two title following their 2-0 home win over Crewe.

A penalty after 51 minutes by George Moncur before Charlie Kelman doubled the lead on 77 minutes guaranteed the title in front of a passionate Orient crowd already celebrating the club’s return to League One for the first time since 2014-15.

Paul Smyth and Moncur tested Crewe goalkeeper David Richards in the first half although it was the visitors’ Chris Long who came closest to breaking the deadlock when he beat the offside trap but then blazed his shot high over the bar.

The hosts went ahead when Darren Pratley and Daniel Agyei tangled in the box as they competed for a loose ball and Moncur stepped up to slam home his ninth goal of the season and fifth from the penalty spot.

Orient were then gifted the goal that put the points beyond doubt when a terrible misunderstanding between Richards and Luke Offord left the ball in the path of Kelman who strode on and slipped the ball into an empty net.

Wellens ‘proud’ after sealing title

Leyton Orient manager Richie Wellens:

“The relationship from the bottom to the very top, I am proud of everything. The spirit and attitude of the players. We are a team.

“A few teams have tried to knock us off our perch but just look at how long we’ve been at the top, and look at the gap in points. It is not often you win it with three games still to play.

“We have certain individuals who have quality, but we are a team. Our top goalscorer is on 10, we haven’t got anybody on 25 or 30 goals, we are a team.

“My mission from day one was to stay up last year, so the turnaround in the last 12 months has been remarkable, and everyone at this club deserves it.

“This is a massive achievement for any team, but even more so when you consider what has happened to this club in the past six years.

“Going from the National League to League One in such a short space of time is extremely difficult. Thankfully this club has achieved it.”
