Barcelona have confirmed England defender Lucy Bronze has undergone knee surgery.

The defender went down in the 65th minute of Barca’s Champions League meeting with Chelsea on Saturday clutching her knee, receiving medical attention in the pitch. Concerns were heightened when, as she went to walk off, her knee gave away.

With Beth Mead and Leah Williamson both set to miss this summer’s World Cup, Lionesses boss Sarina Wiegman is possibly facing another injury headache.

Barca head coach Jonatan Giraldez, however, tried to play down these concerns as he spoke ahead of their second-leg tie with Chelsea on Thursday: “She has lots of experience, the feelings are good with her knee. She has a strain, an ailment. It’s a tiny intervention, just a couple of weeks.”
